67% of Democrat Voters Disapprove of Democrat Congress
Quinnipiac
August 16, 2007
By a 71 - 24 percent margin, American voters agree with a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision
that public schools may not consider an individual's race when deciding which students are
assigned to specific schools, according to a Quinnipiac University national poll released
today.
Republican voters agree with the decision 79 - 17 percent, while Democrats agree 64 - 30
percent and independent voters agree 71 - 24 percent, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe- ack)
University poll finds.
All American voters approve 45 - 37 percent of the job the Supreme Court is doing, down from a
58 - 37 percent approval May 3, and close to the Court's lowest approval, 44 - 39 percent, May 25,
2005. But the Supreme Court has a higher approval than the other two branches of government.
American voters disapprove 70 - 20 percent of the job Congress is doing, the lowest score ever
in a Quinnipiac University poll. While Democrats control Congress, Democratic voters disapprove 67
- 23 percent.
Voters disapprove 64 - 29 percent of the job President George W. Bush is doing, among his
lowest marks ever.
"It's a judicial victory among the three branches of government. The Supreme Court scores
higher than President Bush or the Congress on job approval. The Democrats won control of the House
and Senate, but the voters - even the Democratic voters - don't think they're doing a good job,"
said Maurice Carroll, Director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.
"Many liberals were outraged by the recent school desegregation decision, calling it a retreat
from Brown v Board of Education. But almost three-fourths of voters approved."
The Supreme Court is too liberal, 20 percent of voters say, while 29 percent say it's too
conservative and 37 percent say it's "about right."
The President's appointment of Supreme Court justices is "very important" in their vote for
President next year, 52 percent of voters say, while 36 percent say it is "somewhat
important."
In making its decisions, the Supreme Court should consider only the intentions of the authors
of the Constitution, 43 percent of American voters say, while 48 percent say the Court should
consider changing times and current realities.
American voters continue to support the Roe v Wade decision 62 - 32 percent, consistent with
past poll findings.
On the subject of abortion:
- 21 percent say it should be legal in all cases;
- 36 percent say it should be legal in most cases;
- 24 percent say it should be illegal in most cases;
- 13 percent say it should be illegal in all cases.
"It's bi-partisan: Most Americans say they'll consider the next president's likely ability to
name several Supreme Court justices in their presidential vote," Carroll said.
"Original intent or consideration of changing mores? Voters go with Mr. Dooley - the Supreme
Court should heed the headlines.
"And on abortion, we still find most Americans - 60 percent - in the middle."
From August 7 - 13, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,545 American voters with a margin of error
of +/- 2.5 percent, including 611 Republicans with a margin of error of +/- 4.0 percent, and 717
Democrats with a margin of error of +/- 3.7 percent.
The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion
surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida, Ohio and nationwide as a
public service and for research.
