You Can Open Diebold Voting Machines With Common Minibar Key

September 18, 2006

The access panel door on a Diebold AccuVote-TS voting machine — the door that protects the memory card that stores the votes, and is the main barrier to the injection of a virus — can be opened with a standard key that is widely available on the Internet.

This makes me wonder why we don't just go back to a voting system that consists of a piece of paper and a marker. You get your paper with candidates on it, you mark the candidates you want with the marker and then you deposit your paper in a locked box for later counting.

That's the way we used to do it, no? It seems like in moving away from that we've just made things worse than they were.
