Moussaoui Gets Life

ALEXANDRIA, Va. One of the court-appointed attorneys for Zacarias Moussaoui (zak-uh-REE'-uhs moo-SOW'-ee) says it's clear that the jury at his trial didn't think he had much of a role to play on Nine-Eleven.

Gerald Zerkin says jurors believed that his knowledge and involvement were "not very great" -- and that's one reason they sentenced him to life in prison, instead of death.

Another defense attorney, Edward MacMahon, said Moussaoui was the "most difficult" defendant he's ever had to represent. Moussaoui's own testimony undercut his lawyers' claim that he was just a peripheral figure.

MacMahon said the defense lawyers "respect the jury's verdict," and offer their condolences to those who lost family members in the attacks.
