Quinnipiac University Polling Results-
Iraqi Withdrawal

December 6, 2005 - Americans Say Fight Terror, But Not In Iraq, Quinnipiac
University National Poll Finds; Many Say Get Out Of Iraq Now
American voters say 77 - 17 percent that the U.S. should continue a global war
on terrorism, but almost 60 percent of voters say the U.S. should withdraw its
troops from Iraq, with 40 percent who say get out immediately, according to a
Quinnipiac University national poll released today. Another 4 percent say get
out in six months; 10 percent say get out in one year and 5 percent say get out
in two to three years. Only 34 percent of voters oppose setting a deadline or
immediate withdrawal. Going to war in Iraq was the wrong thing to do, American
voters say 54 - 41 percent, the lowest support in any poll by the independent
Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University. And voters say 49 - 46 percent that the
Bush Administration deliberately misled the American people in making its case
for the war. "Americans want to fight terror, but they don't think Iraq is the
place to do it. Forty percent say 'get out now,' and another 19 percent favor a
phased withdrawal," said Maurice Carroll, Director of the Quinnipiac University
Polling Institute. "Not only is the President pushing an unpopular war,
Americans think he lied to get us into it.
"So far, Bush's how-to-win-in-Iraq speeches don't seem to be helping him.
His job approval goes down-down-down and the approval numbers on his top team -
except for Secretary of State Rice - are negative, too. "If it's any
consolation to the White House, Congress scores even lower."
In an open-ended question, where respondents can give any answer, 31 percent
of voters say the war in Iraq is the most important problem facing the U.S.
today, followed by 16 percent who list the economy and 7 percent who list
terrorism.
A total of 39 percent of voters are "very satisfied" or "somewhat satisfied"
with the way things are going in the U.S., with 59 percent who are "somewhat
dissatisfied" or "very dissatisfied," the lowest satisfaction rate in a
Quinnipiac University national poll.
American voters disapprove 54 - 40 percent of the job President George W.
Bush is doing, his lowest rating in a Quinnipiac University national poll.
Voters disapprove 60 - 36 percent of his handling of the Iraq war. Looking at
other members of the Bush team:
- Voters disapprove 51 - 35 percent of the job Vice President Dick Cheney is
doing;
- Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld gets a 47 - 40 percent disapproval
rating;
- Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice gets a positive 61 - 25 percent approval
rating.
American voters disapprove 61 - 27 percent of the job Congress is doing.
Looking at the 2006 Congressional races, voters say 47 - 36 percent that they
would like to see the Democrats win control of Congress.
2008 Presidential Race
By a 36 - 32 percent margin, American voters have a favorable opinion of New
York Sen. Hillary Clinton, with 16 percent mixed.
Arizona Sen. John McCain gets a 32 - 11 percent favorability rating, with 25
percent mixed.
In a possible 2008 Presidential matchup, McCain edges Clinton 44 - 40
percent.
"It's still very early and we'll certainly hear from other candidates. But
Republican John McCain and Democrat Hillary Clinton are in a close race for
President," Carroll said.
From November 28 - December 4, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,230
registered voters nationwide. The survey has a margin of error of +/- 2.8
percentage points.
The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D.,
conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut,
Pennsylvania, Florida and nationwide as a public service and for research.
